Southern Illinois University to host 'Youth Government Day'

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Paul Simon Public Policy Institute will host the 15th annual Youth Government Day Saturday April 25.

Several of Illinois' leading young legislators and officials will share their perspectives about politics and public service.

"Youth Government Day is an opportunity for Illinois students to learn about state government and President Lincoln," David Yepsen, institute director said.

"Students visit the state capitol, tour the offices and hear from experts about how state government works and where decisions get made. They also have an opportunity to tour the Lincoln Museum and learn about his history."

The opening keynote address speaker will be the communications director for Gov. Bruce Rauner, Lance Trover.

Trover is a Vienna native and 2006 SIU school of Law graduate. In addition to working at the institute he previously was communications director for U.S. Senator Mark Kirk and deputy communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Other speakers in breakout sessions include newly elected state representatives Avery Bourne (R-Lithcfield) and Carol Ammons (D-Champaign). The afternoon keynote address will be presented by State Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Jacksonville).

The Youth Government Day begins at 9 a.m. with welcoming remarks.
