MARION, IL (KFVS) - Earth Day is a great time to celebrate being outside and that was exactly the plan Wednesday morning at Lincoln Elementary School in Marion.

There was a dedication of the school's new learning and reading garden at 10 a.m.

The garden, which showcases native Illinois plants and trees, is designed to help kids learn about plants and to read outside.

Thirteen-year-old Trevor Whittington, an Eagle Scout from Williamson County, is responsible for creation of the garden.

Lincoln administrators say they couldn't be more thankful for Trevor and his team.

""He does community service throughout Southern Illinois," Lincoln principal, John Fletcher said. "So they were able to pick this project and so we got the benefit of a really great Carterville student working to help benefit our teachers here and our great students here at Lincoln."

The garden will also serve as a memorial to Ann Patterson, a retired school teacher at Lincoln Elementary, who passed away last year.

A bench in her honor is located in the garden and was purchased by her daughter, Shawnna Donovan.
