Officers recognized at Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - About 100 people gathered in Cape Girardeau on Tuesday to say thank you to the city's law enforcement.

It was all for Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, hosted by the Cape Girardeau Friends of Public Safety.

Doug Austin, a member of the committee, hopes the event reminds everyone of the sacrifice and commitment officers make every day for all of us.

"We have to have law and order," Austin said. "We have to have mutual respect for each other. We have to have boundaries and we would like to think that we are all honorable people and we will all follow that respect and boundaries but we just don't . We need to be trained, we need to be educated, we need to be mentored and that's what our police department does for us. And we are just extraordinarily proud of them."

The event included a choir performance by Alma Schrader Elementary and a tribute to five of the department's fallen officers.

Austin said this is the first year for the event, but he hopes to make it an annual event.
