CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Cape Riverfront Market is set to open for its 2015 season on Saturday, May 2.

Opening day festivities will include live music from Southeast Missouri State University's Steel Drum band, dance from Southeast Missouri State University's Theater and Dance Department, and homemade pancakes from the market's Demonstrations Committee.

According to Old Town Cape, the growing season got off to a slow start.

However, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs will be available along with a diverse selection of specialty farm goods, baked items, artisan crafts, and ready-to-eat foods.

There will be seven new seasonal vendors featuring wood crafts, handmade furniture, and earth-friendly body care products.

The market will run every Saturday from 8 am to noon through the end of October.

It is one the few markets in the area that accepts EBT/Food Stamp benefit cards qualifying goods to expand healthy options for low income individuals and families.

The market also features the Cape Marketeers Club which is a free program for kids focusing on nutrition, science and growing food.

The educational experiments and activities held on the 2nd and 4th Saturday from May to August allow kids to earn $2 in tokens to purchase fruits or vegetables at the market.

The Cape Riverfront Market is located at 35 S. Spanish Street in downtown Cape Girardeau.
