Cardinals call up former former Navy lieutenant

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -  The St. Louis Cardinals have called up 29-year-old former Navy lieutenant Mitch Harris.

Harris is a 2008 graduate of the Naval Academy and had a rank of second lieutenant.

He started his professional baseball career in 2013 after the Cardinals selected him in the 13th round of the 2008 amateur draft.

The right-handed pitcher was called up to take the place of outfielder Peter Bourjos who was put on the paternity list Tuesday.

The contract of Harris was selected from AAA Memphis where he had a 2.45 ERA with two saves and will pitch out of the bullpen for the Cardinals.

Harris, who is from Ocala, Florida, tweeted: "What a journey ... the dream has come true.  From Navy to MLB.  Looking forward to what the future holds."

The only Naval Academy graduate to appear in a major league game was Nemo Gaines of the 1921 Washington Senators according to the Hall of Fame.
