SIU recognized again for "green" efforts

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Southern Illinois University in Carbondale has earned national recognition for its commitment to "green" initiatives for the third year in a row and the fourth time in six years.

The Princeton Review's Guide to 353 Green Colleges: 2015 Edition, which was released on April 16, highlights SIU and other universities on the basis of their 2014 "green rating" scores. The scores were calculated using data detailing school sustainability-related policies, practices and programs. Nearly 900 institutions were reviewed and those with a score of 83 or above are included in the guide.

SIU boasts of numerous "green" initiatives and activities to increase recycling and reusing, such as the vermicomposting that creates compost from campus dining food waste. A recent expansion involved building an aerated static pile facility that is expected to greatly increase the university's composting capacity, said SIU Sustainability Coordinator Kris Schachle.

The news coincides with the annual Earth Day celebration, set for Wednesday, April 22.

About 61% of nearly 10,000 teenagers said having information about a school's commitment to the environment would influence their decisions about applying to or attending college, said Robert Franek, senior vice-president/publisher for The Princeton Review.
