$1M bond set for suspect in deadly Marion shooting

MARION, IL (KFVS) - The suspect in a deadly shooting in Marion was in court on Wednesday in Williamson County.

Jack Thomas Jr., 34, was arrested in White County, Illinois after his truck was found in Hamilton County, according to the White County Sheriff's Department.

Thomas faces three counts of first degree murder.

The state's attorney Wednesday asked for bond to remain at $1,000,000, according to Jimmy Dean with the state's attorney's office.

The judge granted that request. Then, charges against Thomas were read.

Thomas is looking at 25-years to life if he is convicted.

His next court appearance is May 18 at 1:15 p.m. in Williamson County.

White County Sheriff Doug Maier said Thomas was found at a home on Oak Street. He said Thomas surrendered peacefully around 1:30 p.m.

Police Chief Dawn Tondini and Williamson County States Attorney Brandon Zanotti held a press conference at the Marion Police Department at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday concerning the investigation.

They said they interviewed several witnesses and the investigation is ongoing.

Detectives were sent to Carmi, Ill., but they don't know if the weapon has been recovered.

A search warrant was issued for the truck and authorities are searching for the truck now.

Authorities believe it was an isolated incident involving a fight.

The victim had allegedly been visiting the house where the shooting took place. His last known address was in Marion, Ill.

They say they shooting happened outside of the home.

On Monday, April 20 at about 10:40 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 300 block of West College Street.

They found Michael Reed, 30, of Marion shot several times.

Reed was rushed to the hospital where he died of his injuries.

Allegedly there was no known history between the suspect and victim. Authorities say they were acquainted through a mutual friend.

This is the first homicide investigation for the prosecutor and chief in their roles.

Zanotti said his office has worked closely with the police department.
