BERNIE, MO (KFVS) - A man faces assault and drug charges after police say he tried to strangle a woman.

Carlos Castro, 43, is charged with domestic assault - second degree and possession of a controlled substance. His bond is set at $25,000.

Misty Hicks, 35, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance. Her bond is $12,500.

Bernie police responded to a report of screams and a shot fired at 608 N. Miller in Bernie on April 18.

At first, Hicks went to a window and would not open the door. Then, the patrolman saw Castro holding something behind Hicks and he called for back up.

When more police arrived, the pair opened the door.

Police found a white powder substance in a spoon on a nightstand, several new and used syringes, a beer can that was used as a pipe, and several other drug paraphernalia items.

Police found a gun under a mattress in a bedroom.

Hicks told police that Castro was her ex and they broke up a month and a half ago. She said she was given a gun to protect herself.

She also told police that Castro came to the house with a duffle bag with needles and plastic bags and asked her to inject him, according to the probable cause statement. When she tried to walk away, she said Castro pushed her and tried to choke her.

Then, she said Castro faked being shot.

Police say after Castro was arrested, he faked a heart attack at the jail.

Both were taken to the Stoddard County Jail.
