30 Cape Girardeau homeowners to get $7,000 for home repairs

Cape Girardeau homeowners now have the chance to make their homes more beautiful and more functional at no cost to them.

A $219,990 grant will go toward repairs at 30 homes in Cape Girardeau.

One woman said she hopes the program can help others just like it did for her.

Windows, fresh paint, a new water heater, Bessie Crites said the home repairs she got through the grant program have made a world of difference.

"It's still hard for me to comprehend all the work they did and it cost me nothing,” Crites said. "It's just great because there are so many people that cannot have that work done."

The program has been running for several years, but this year, Housing Assistance Coordinator Stephen Williams said there's more money available. Each home owner will get $7,000 in repairs.

"We give priority to seniors and we give priority to the disabled,” Williams said.

Williams said the income requirements for the grant are based on the HUD guidelines. The grants are first come first serve and the money only covers needed repairs.

"Roofs put on, furnaces replaced, they had air conditioners replaced,” Williams said.

This grant is the result of a joint effort between Wood & Huston Bank and the City of Cape Girardeau. Williams said it makes up for state funding that was lost back in 2005.

"Because of funding, the state no longer was able to finance the neighborhood development program, so we were without programs for a number of years,” Williams said.

As for folks like Crites, they're sure glad for programs like this, giving her a hand up when she needed it.

"There are needy people,” Crites said. "I give God the credit because He makes a way sometimes when they're doesn't seem to be a way."

The program offers classes on things like how to make home repairs and how to buy a home.

You can find out more info on applying at an upcoming meeting on April 28 at 7 p.m. at city hall.
