Murphysboro man sentenced for stealing chainsaws

A Murphysboro man was sentenced to prison for burglary, according to Michael C. Carr, Jackson County State's Attorney.

Mark O. Lies, 52, of Murphysboro, Illinois, was charged in Jackson County Circuit Court with two counts of burglary.

He was sentenced to serve 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on each count.

The defendant will serve a period of mandatory supervised release upon his release from the Department of Corrections of three years.

On February 14, officers with the Murphysboro Police Department responded to Rural King in Murphysboro for the report of a vehicle burglary.

The victim reported that someone stole two chainsaws from the bed of his pickup truck.

Officers secured video surveillance from Rural King which provided them a suspect description, along with a description of the vehicle the suspect used to flee from the scene.

A short time later, officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched the vehicle depicted in the video surveillance. Lies, was the driver of that vehicle.

After a search, officers found the victim's stolen property in the trunk. The defendant later admitted to removing the chainsaws from the victim's truck.

During this investigation, officers learned that the defendant committed another vehicle burglary the previous day.

The defendant was captured on video surveillance from Kroger entering another victim's vehicle while it was parked in the parking lot.

The two 10 year sentences will run concurrently.

This investigation was conducted by the Murphysboro Police Department.

Assistant State's Attorney Casey Bloodworth prosecuted this case.
