CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - For some running in the Boston Marathon this year, it has become more than just a race.

Wednesday marked the two year anniversary of the Boston Bombing that killed three people and injured hundreds more.

Cape Girardeau runner Laura Sheridan will compete in Boston on Monday.

Sheridan is already an accomplished athlete.

She ran track for Southeast Missouri State in college and has completed several triathlons.

She had friends running the marathon in 2013 and knows how special it is to be able to compete there now.

"It's always been a race that's about tradition, being one of the first races that females competed in,” Sheridan said. “Now with the bombing events, it's more a tribute to those who can't run and really a celebration whether you're a spectator or a runner."

This will be Sheridan's first Boston Marathon. It is a race you have to qualify for.

She'll be heading there Saturday with other area runners.
