Cape Girardeau mail processing center to stay open for now

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Good news for employees at the Cape Girardeau Mail Distribution Center, and your mail delivery.

The U.S. Postal Service confirms some mail sorting operations will continue in Cape Girardeau past the April 18, 2015 closure date.

"Our plans had always indicated a need for some fluidity to reflect postal operational needs," said Twana Barber, a communications program specialist with the Postal Service based in Kansas City.

"We are extending the term for which we will continue some mail sorting operations in the Cape Girardeau facility. We will continue to work with our employees, our mailers and our community to work towards the best use of space, staffing, equipment and transportation to process the nation's changing mail mix," said Barber in an email.

Barber said they will continue making changes necessary to provide service customers expect.

There's no word on how long the Cape Girardeau center will continue operations.

The Cape Girardeau closure is part of a planned consolidation of up to 82 processing centers that would affect 15,000 jobs in 37 states.
