Students participate in safety conference, mock crash

PERRY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

It is prom season for Heartland schools and many students will be out celebrating.

On Tuesday, April 14, some students got a reminder to celebrate safely and to not drink and drive.

Around 350 Perry County juniors and seniors took part in a conference.

There were videos, guest speakers and a drama that portrayed a drunk driving crash scene.

Organizers say one of the most powerful parts of the event is that students act in the drama to remind their peers of the dangers of drinking and driving.

"If a young person sees one of the friends in this car scene accident, all of the sudden it's, 'This really could happen,'" Jeanette Klobe, Perry County community task force director, said. "It is a really hard, in-your-face reality check that'll make you think twice before you act, and be careful with what you do because you can lose a lot and you've got a great future ahead of you."

The Perry County community task force heads up the annual event, but it's a community effort.

Agencies including the Missouri State Highway Patrol, city police and fire departments all volunteer their time as well.
