CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Students studying radio, television, and digital media at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will now work with state-of-the-art equipment thanks to federal grant.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded WSIU Public Television a $749,000 Public Television Digital Transition grant.

Existing equipment in studio and in the production room has been replaced with new HD cameras, teleprompters, and digital switchboards.

Students will have access to television equipment only seen in large television viewing areas according to University Spokesperson Pete Rosenbery.

Associate director for television and video services Darryl Moses said the new equipment takes students beyond the classroom.

“They get a very solid foundation on how to function in a working environment,” Moses said. “Students who come here and work with us will be able to go into a work environment and not go ‘look at this.' The room might be different, but they will be comfortable working on that room.”

The new equipment will allow students to get hands on experience in broadcast production that will ready them for the workforce, said Gregg Todd, an SIUC instructor and news director of the news program.
