CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Carbondale Fire Department was called to to a two story house fire Sunday morning after a business owner noticed a fire.

The house is near the corner of University and Cherry Street. That's near the Varsity Theater, just behind Dairy Queen.

The fire was on the second floor. It started around 10 a.m.

There were a number of people in the house at the time the fire broke out.

Just after 10 a.m. the owner of Dairy Queen saw the flames and went over to the house to pound on the front door.

All of the residents inside were asleep and were awakened by the business owner.  The residents got out okay.

Those in the home do not have renters insurance.

The Red Cross has offered them room for the night, and city officials provided food for them throughout the day.

Police were also at the scene.

Some college students were standing outside with boxes of items. Also, a number of onlookers were outside watching crews put out the blaze.

Authorities say foul play is not suspected.
