CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - More than $13,000 was raised at a somewhat explosive event on Saturday, all in support of Autism Awareness.

The event was the Southern Illinois Autism Society's second annual color run.

More than 800 people showed up nice and clean, and finished the 5K through SIU's campus with a much more vibrant look.

There were several stations set up across campus whose duty it was to 'blast' runners with various colors of a chalk-like powder.

There were also games for kids, a walking course, and even bacon wrapped corn dogs.

Organizers say the event is a great way to raise awareness, and they hope it helps reduce the number of undiagnosed cases.

"Even if your concerned, or you might see some things that raise concern, go talk to your doctor." urged event organizer Stephanie Brown "Because in the end, that's the best way to get the best outcome for your children, and that's what all parents want, the best outcome for their children."

Some of the money will go to provide swimming lessons for local children with autism. Organizers of Saturday's event say drowning is the leading cause of death among children with Autism.
