CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - More than 350 participants took part in the Special Olympics in Cape Girardeau on Saturday.

The track and field event featured many events including swimming relays, shot put, long jump and track relays.

Hundreds of volunteers, parents and friends were on hand showing their support and cheering on the athletes.

Athletes were awarded medals for first, second and third place.

Qualifying athletes will advance to state competition later this year.

Tim Kunz of Jackson will participate in the Special Olympics World Games in the summer in Los Angeles, California.

Athletes said it's a joy to be able to participate in events they don't normally get to be involved in. They also say it's great having so much support and seeing so many people cheer for them during competition.

The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department organized this event.

Money raised will help out other events during the year.
