Founder of Discovery Park of America in Union City dies

UNION CITY, TN (KFVS) -

The founder of Discovery Park of America in Union City, Tennessee has died.

According to a news release, Robert Kirkland, 77, passed away Saturday morning at his home.

A celebration of life will be held at the park on Wednesday, April 15.

Arrangements are being handled by White-Ransom & White & Mahon Funeral Home in Union City.

Family requests that memorials be made to the Discovery Park of America's Education Department. It will be used for children who might not be able to come to the park.

“Today marks a very sad day as I lose a life-long friend, Robert Kirkland. We have been friends for as long as I remember and I will miss him. Robert has been a great friend to me, to this community and to this region. We have him to thank for many wonderful things that have happened in this area," said Jim Rippy, CEO Discovery Park of America and lifelong friend of Robert Kirkland.

Kirkland was born February 19, 1938, in Newberry, S.C. and grew up in Union City.
