Williamson Co. state's attorney warns of fake IRS calls

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Williamson County's state's attorney is warning residents about scam phone calls claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service.

Williamson County State's Attorney Brandon J. Zanotti says his office has been receiving complaints from people saying callers falsely represents they are with the Internal Revenue Service and they demand money for unpaid taxes, claiming they will have you arrested if you do not pay.

If you receive one of these, Zanotti warns to not give them any of your money or personal information. These calls are not from the IRS.

The IRS will never call demanding money immediately, demand payment by credit card over the phone, or threaten to have you arrested or involve local police.

If you believe you have been the victim of one of these calls, call the Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's Office or report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tiata.gov. If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words "IRS Telephone Scam".
