Official Cape Girardeau County results in, possible recount

JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

Cape Girardeau County leaders declared Friday that the Use Tax question had officially passed.

Its gives county leaders the green light to move forward with plans for a new courthouse. That is unless someone files for a recount.

Even before the County Clerk, Kara Clark Summers announced the official results from Tuesday's election, she says one citizen had approached her about filing for a recount for the Use Tax question.

She says people have 30 days from when the official results are announced to file a recount through the Circuit Clerks office.

If there is one, Summers' says over 7,000 ballots will have to be counted manually and then run through the ballot machines again.

She says it's a lengthy process but she expects there to be a challenge.

“That will cost money, more money to the election process the county will have to pay for that recount process; because we will have to have teams of judges come in and work on that recount because it will be a cumbersome process, but we will do it,” she said.

County commissioners have already discussed preliminary plans for the new $20 million courthouse.

If there isn't a recount the tax would start as early as August 2015.
