CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Visible bruises on a young child lead to a state hotline call, and charges against a Cape Girardeau couple.

Michael Mathes and Candice Marks each face a count of felony child abuse.

According to court documents, each is accused of spanking a five year old with wooden paddles, leaving bruises on the child's arms, legs and buttocks.

Court records show police interviewed Mathes April 8, 2015 after someone noticed the child's bruises and called the Missouri Children's Division abuse hotline.

Investigators say the child reported being spanked by both Mathes and Marks with a wooden paddle and that Marks would hold the child down while Mathes used the paddle.

The deputy who interviewed Mathes says he admitted using wooden paddles to spank the child and that those paddles had to be glued back together after they broke during previous spankings.

Investigators say the child also described standing in the corner for hours as punishment.

Mathes reportedly showed officers where the child would stand, and noted that paint had been removed from the wall from the child's nose rubbing up against it.

Both Mathes and Marks are out of jail on bond.  Both will be arraigned in Cape Girardeau County court April 13, 2015.
