Authorities warn of telephone scam making rounds in Jackson County

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -

Jackson County residents should be aware of a telephone scam-fraud occurring in the area, according to the sheriff's office.

An unknown caller claiming to be a representative of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office is demanding payment of a fine concerning failure to report for jury duty.

The caller states a warrant will be issued for that person's arrest if the fine is not paid.

The caller instructs the person to purchase pre-paid debit cards and pay the fine over the telephone, then the warrant will be canceled.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says it does not call residents demanding payment.

In addition, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office does not provide warrant information over the phone.

If you think you've received a call like this, please call the Jackson County Sheriffs Office at 618-684-2177 to make a report.

The sheriff's office says don't give out personal information over the phone to someone you don't know.
