CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Do you prefer to get your daily pick-me-up from coffee? A lot of people do. Some lucky ones got their coffee free Thursday morning in Carbondale.

Southern Illinois University police officers were handing out coffee, shaking hands, talking to people, and answering questions as part of their "Coffee with a Cop" program.

"I think it's a really good thing for University,” said SIU Patrol Officer Allan Willmore. “I think that a lot of times when we law-enforcement interact with the public it's usually in some kind enforcement action. This is a way for us to interact with the public in a non-enforcement action. It allows us to just talk with people and find out what concerns they have and basically see if we can do anything about it."

Several other Heartland police departments have their own program, including Cape Girardeau and Jackson.
