CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

On Wednesday, the Heartland saw some severe weather and Thursday is going to be more of the same according to the First Alert Weather Team.

Some areas saw baseball sized hail on Wednesday.

So, do you know what to do if your home or vehicle gets suffers damage?  The Missouri Department of Insurance has some tips.

  • Contact your insurance agent or insurance company as soon as possible.
  • Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage.  A tarp over a hole in the roof or to cover a broken car window.  Keep receipts for anything you    have to buy so you can be reimbursed.
  • Do not make permanent repairs until your insurance company has inspected the damage.
  • Once your claim is processed, then you can get estimates from contractors or auto repair shops.  Use only businesses recommended by someone else.
  • Don't pay your whole repair bill in advance.  Pay only when the work is completed.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can call the Insurance Consumer Hotline at (800) 726-7390.
