Noranda's President supports Sikeston United Way with record setting donation

NEW MADRID, MO (KFVS) - The Sikeston/Bootheel Area United Way recognized Noranda's CEO and President for donating $10,000 to the organization on Thursday.  

The donation is the largest donation by an individual to the local organization.

"I had the privilege to personally benefit from a local community center which continues to be funded in part by the United Way," Layle Kip Smith said in a news release. "I understand how important the United Way funding is to the mission of this organization and the agencies it supports.  As a result, I am committed to Noranda's role in giving back tot he community through the United Way."

In a short presentation in New Madrid at Noranda Aluminum Smith was also granted membership in the United Way Tocqueville Society.  

The Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions who have devoted time, talent and funds to create long-lasting changes by tackling serious community issues.

Noranda's New Madrid smelter and its employees are the largest contributors to the Sikeston/Bootheel Area United Way, donating over $100,000 dollars to the local United Way during the past three years.
