Williamson Co. Sheriff's Dept. to host 7th annual traffic safety event for teen drivers

MARION, IL (KFVS) - More than 1,500 drivers are expected to take part in the 7th annual Williamson County Traffic Safety on April 14 through April 17.

Students from 39 High Schools across southern Illinois are expected to attend including: Marion, Herrin, Eldorado, Carterville, Benton, West Frankfort, Trico, Ziegler, Carrier Mills/Stonefort, Pinkneyville, Anna Jonesboro, Cobden, Galatia, Christopher and more.

Students will learn the dangers of distracted driving and will also have the opportunity to take part in driving simulations.

Deputy Brian Murrah with the Williamson County Sheriff's Department said the event is about teaching young drivers simple, yet life saving tips.

“They'll get it from the law enforcement perspective, they'll get it from the EMT perspective," Murrah said.  "And it all boils down to ‘hey, you just have make a couple of fairly good decisions.'"

Deputy Murrah said these traffic safety days are showing results in the County.

He said teen driving related crashes are down by nearly half since the program started.
