CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A Cape Girardeau man is accused of stealing nearly $73,000 from his former employer, Velosity Electronics.

According to the probable cause statement, Jeffrey D. Lage is facing theft charges for stealing more than $25,000, a Class B Felony.

Velosity Electronics reported an employee theft on October 30, 2014.

After being notified by Bank of Missouri that their banking account was getting low, the statement says Velosity Electronics discovered Lage had been transferring money to his personal Capital One credit card since March 24, 2014.

Detective Jeff Lucas, with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, wrote in the statement that over the course of 8 months, Lage reportedly made 50 transactions from the Velosity Electronics' bank account totaling about $68,789.95.

According to the statement, Lage also apparently used Velosity's bank account to pay Ameren UE $2,210.21 in May, August and October.

Detective Lucas also reports that Lage reportedly stole $1,989.08 from the business cash register and he would fill out deposit slips to include reward checks sent in the mail to Velosity from Capital One.

The statement said Lage would take the equivalent amount of cash out of the register.

Online court documents show Perry County Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Hoeh has been appointed the special prosecutor at the request of Cape Girardeau Prosecuting attorney Chris Limbaugh.

The probable cause statement reports Lage started working for Velosity in 2008.

Ryan Frenz, co-owner of Velosity Electronics, said Lage was terminated in October 2014.

Frenz said Velosity remains fully operational and is currently not at risk of being out of business.

An initial arraignment is scheduled for April 27, 2015 at the Cape Girardeau County courthouse in Jackson.
