Illinois lawmaker asking people to wear blue

RED BUD, IL (KFVS) - An Illinois lawmaker wants to paint the state blue.

Rep. Jerry Costello (D) is asking people to wear blue on Friday, April 10 to raise awareness about child abuse.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

"Wearing blue is an easy way to raise awareness of a very serious issue that can affect anyone," Costello said.

According to the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services, 125,000 children are abused or neglected in Illinois every year, and one in five children will be abused before they turn 18.

That's just the numbers being reported. Officials estimate an additional 100,000 cases of child abuse go unreported each year.

"If you are a victim of abuse," Costello said, "or know someone who is...please reach out for help by contacting local law enforcement or the child abuse hotline."

To report abuse confidentially, call the crisis hotline at 1-800-252-2873.
