ALTO PASS, IL (KFVS) -

For 79 consecutive years, Christians in the Heartland have started their Easter Sunday with the sunrise service on top of Bald Knob Mountain in Alto Pass.

The 2015 event attracted a crowd of more than one thousand visitors for the 6:15 a.m. service on Sunday morning.

Many of those folks traversed the winding mountain pass through Union County the night before, and camped out on the mountaintop.

The event started with the playing of amazing grace on bagpipes, followed by a few other musical performances and hymns.

Guest Speaker D.W. Presley then began the sermon with a brief history of the cross, which is celebrating its 52nd year on the mountain.

Thirteen minutes into the service, the sun peeked over the distant horizon behind the podium, giving audience members a wide view of 7,500 square miles of countryside spanning through Missouri and Illinois.

Bald Knob Cross of Peace sits roughly 1,000 feet above sea level according to the organization's web site, and stands 111 feet over the summit of Bald Knob Mountain.
