Season’s first outdoor farmer’s market held in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Spring is truly setting in, and a huge crowd set out today to find some proof of that for themselves.

A few hundred folks came out to this season's first outdoor farmer's market in Carbondale.

Until fall of 2015 arrives, area residents can come out every Saturday for fresh produce, and a wide selection of home-grown plants.

In addition, there is also home-cooked food and live music.

There were more than 50 vendors on site Saturday.

Many of them say they hope the event encourages people to get into gardening themselves.

“I've been doing this since 1977, said Doug Young, a farmer. "For me, I like being outdoors, I like physical labor, I like working with a hoe - you know, these days, manual labor isn't really highly regarded - and I think that's kind of a shame."

If you missed out on the first one of the season, you can catch it from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday at Westowne Market in Carbondale.
