BERNIE, MO (KFVS) - A family whose farm is in the middle of nowhere was the target of a powerful storm.

The family says they hit the floor when the storm rolled through their tiny town in Bernie, Missouri.

And when they walked out their front door after it passed, winds still howling, it was site they never expected to see.

"Just in a flash,” said John Grindsteaff .

The Grindsteaff family woke up Friday morning to their front yard torn apart.

Swings completely uprooted from their bases, mangled metal and railings were snapped in half, no different from the trees sitting just a few feet away.

"We were lucky," he said. "We are alive. We could have been up in that tree with that tin."

The most extensive damage happened just across the road.

"Just all of sudden, just boom," said Grindsteaff.

Grindsteaff  thinks the cost to have the grain bin replaced will cost tens of thousands of dollars.

But he's just happy his family is safe.

Information from last night's storm was given to the National Weather Service it's unknown if it was a tornado that touched down near Bernie or high winds.
