METROPOLIS, IL (KFVS) - The City of Metropolis Police Department will soon be getting a new furry police officer.

A 10-month-old female German Shepherd named Zeva will soon join the force as a K-9 unit.

Metropolis Patrolman Tim Davis and Zeva will head to a 10-week K-9 training program at the State Police Academy in Springfield, Ill. in August.

Zeva will be trained and certified as a full service dog to detect narcotics, article searches, tracking and apprehension.

Davis has raised Zeva since she was a pup, at his home, along with his wife and four children.

"That was really important to me… So I could have her around my children and the other pets at the house," Davis said. "And not have to worry about any problems.”

The current Metropolis Police dog is nine years old and its state certification will be up soon.

The department has decided it's time to train a new K-9 officer to take its place.
