Community mourns loss of family killed in plane crash

Illinois communities are mourning the loss of four family members killed in a western Kentucky plane crash on Friday night.

Marty Gutzler, his wife, Kimberly Gutzler, their daughter Piper, and their niece, Sierra Wilder died when their private plane crash landed in Lyon County, Ky. The Gutzler's 7-year-old daughter, Sailor, survived. All were from Nashville, Ill.

The night of the crash the family was reportedly headed to the Mount Vernon Outland Airport, where Gutzler housed his Piper PA-34.

Airport Director Chris Collins said he knew Marty for more than 20 years and he was well liked around the area.

“He was on a first name basis with everyone. That's how Marty was. He knew everyone. And everyone knew him,” Collins said.

“His friendliness, his smile, he never met a stranger,” Collins said. “Always positive. Those are traits that you miss.”

He said hearing the news about the crash was difficult.

“When the phone calls and texts started coming in, after the names were released, everybody was in disbelief,” said Collins. “And if you lose somebody like that, it hurts.”

Marty has been a pilot for more than 30 years. Collins said Gutzler made the trip to Key West with his family in the same plane many times before.

In the family's hometown of Nashville, classmates of Piper Gutzler and Sierra Wilder, 14, returned to class on Monday.

Nashville Community High School District 99 superintendent Wendy Davis said they have counselors on hand for any students who may need help.
