CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

West Mill Street in Carbondale, Illinois was blocked on Monday afternoon, Jan. 5 due to an apartment fire.

The building is located in the 400 block of W. Mill Street.

Many of the students living in the apartment building were a part of the TKE fraternity.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale does not have official Greek housing. The building was considered off-campus housing.

"I walked around the side, everything's gone. All those rooms, everything's burned out," Christopher Maniatis said. "So, I mean, for now we're gonna have to wait and see what happens."

According to the assistant fire chief, the fire started in the attic and burned the entire attic.

He said the rest of the building has water and smoke damage.

No word on what caused the fire.

The assistant fire chief said crews were on scene from 2 p.m. to around 6:30 p.m.

He said no one was hurt, but the residents won't be able to move back into the building until the property owner fixes it.

According to Dr. Katherine Sermersheim, dean of students for SIU, the university is working to provide alternative housing for the students who live there.
