New Year's Eve is a time for celebration and spending time with family and friends, but the holiday can turn tragic if drinking gets out of control.

Here are some safety tips to keep in your mind during the festivities:

  • Buzzed driving is drunk driving. It can still get you in trouble and, more importantly, can hurt or kill you or someone else.
  • If you drink, do not drive. Call a sober friend, designate a sober driver or have the number for a licensed cab service before heading out to celebrate.
  • Never leave your drink unattended and vulnerable for something to be put in it.

Cab services in the Heartland:

Cape Girardeau County Transit Authority (CGTA) 573-335-5533
Paducah Area Transit Service (PATS) 270-444-8700
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale offers free late-night transit services to currently enrolled students. For a ride call 618-453-2212.

Every day, nearly 30 people in the United States die in vehicle crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cab companies ask people to be patient on New Year's Eve. Some say they can get 10 times as many calls on New Years than any other night.

"From 12:30 to 2 o'clock on New Year's Eve, I can't put the phone down," Designated Drivers cab service owner Tim Duffey said. "I've got three operators and they trickle down but we're getting 10 calls a minute, and it just jams our phone lines."

Duffey says the best thing you do if you call a cab is wait for it.

He says his drivers run into problems when someone else, not the person who calls, takes the cab because the caller was not in the right place
