Missouri minimum wage workers to make more money in 2015

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - January 1 marks the start of a new year, but it also means a new Missouri minimum wage law will take effect.

Missouri employees making minimum wage will receive $7.65 per hour come 2015.

That's up 15 cents from 2014.

Compensation for tipped employees must also total at least $7.65 per hour.

Some experts expect the raise will impact more than 135,000 workers across the state.

But some workers say in the end, they probably will not notice much of a difference.

"It's not going to help at all,” Chaffee One Stop clerk Kristy Halter said. “The more you work, everything else is going to go up as well. If you're going to try and make a difference, yes it needs to go up a lot higher."

Missouri joins 19 other states whose minimum wages will go up on Jan, 1.

Some economist predict to see a small economic surge. They anticipate minimum wage workers will spend more at the stores with higher pay.

The new year will also mark the first time majority of the states will have a state minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage of $7.25.
