Cape Girardeau Co. Sheriff's Office warns of possible jury duty scam

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a possible jury duty scam.

According to the sheriff's office, people in Cape Girardeau County are getting phone calls from a man who claims to be a Cape Girardeau County sheriff's deputy. The man tells them they will be arrested for failing to appear for jury duty unless they pay a fine immediately.

In other versions, the sheriff's office says a pre-recorded message, instead of a live call, will be used to try to scare people into providing personal financial information.

Deputies say a couple of these calls are showing up as 573-210-0261 and 0260 or 573-445-8891.

The court numbers are actually local numbers and will have 243, 204, 334, 335 prefixes.

If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately and report it to your local police department.

To avoid possibly being scammed, the sheriff's office says to keep these things in mind:

  • Court officers won't ask for personal information or seek payment for fines or fees over the phone
  • Most court related correspondence takes place through the mail
  • Never agree to send money to someone who calls you out of the blue
  • Many scams ask you to wire money or send it via a Green Dot MoneyPak Card
  • Never share personal information, such as your social security number or bank account number, with anyone who contacts you

You can verify that you are not on a list for arrest by calling the Cape Girardeau County Circuit Court Clerks Office at 573-204-2395.
