A grandfather and one of his grandsons have died after a boating incident at Rend Lake on Dec. 29.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Department was notified about two people in the water after a boating incident at 12:45 p.m. on Monday.

According to the sheriff's department, Terry Calvert, 63, from New Baden, and his two grandchildren, ages 13 and 11, from Collinsville, were fishing in the Gun Creek area of Rend Lake on Monday afternoon.

The sheriff's department says an incident resulted in the 13-year-old grandson falling into the water.

They say several attempts were made to help the boy back into the boat, but to no avail.

Deputies say Calvert jumped into the lake to rescue the boy, but fell victim to the cold water.

They say the 11 year old was able to call for help from other fishermen in the area.

Calvert was found and pulled into the boat, but the 13 year old was not found.

When EMS arrived on scene, deputies say Calvert was treated and taken to an area hospital were he was pronounced dead.

At 2:30 p.m., a Rend Lake Search and Rescue diver found the 13 year old.

Deputies say the boy was unresponsive and brought to shore.

He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are pending in the Collinsville area.

Members of the Sheriff's Department, Corps of Engineers, Rend Lake Search and Rescue, Benton Fire Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and First Responders, responded to the scene.
