BROOKPORT, IL (KFVS) - The Brookport tornado left many homes destroyed in the community in 2013, but volunteers are coming to the area to help rebuild the community.

“We're giving these people a second chance, a second start,” said volunteer Bill Carr.

Volunteers from everywhere got right to work on Friday morning, building a two bedroom house for Charles Boyt and his family, whose mobile home was destroyed.

“It was pretty bad,” Boyt said. “It knocked it off the blocks and drove the sewer pipe through the toilet and busted the walls and windows and tore the doors off. I had to hammer it back together.”

Eddie Osburn, a member of the Massac & Pope County Recovery Committee, said there's a need for volunteers.

“There's no other way to explain it. They want to help people who are hurting and they are,” Osburn said. “And if I can help stop the hurting just a little bit…that's my job.”

Just a day after Christmas, one of the new homeowners says he's still in shock.

“I just can't believe it,” Boyt said. “They would want to come here the day after Christmas and help.”

In less than five hours, flooring and exterior walls were already put up.

Volunteer coordinators say they hope to have the home completed within six weeks.

This will be the 14th house completed in Brookport. More than 900 volunteers have helped out with the various construction projects.

The Massac and Pope County recovery committee hopes to work on 14 more new houses in the near future and continue to rebuild Brookport.

For those interested in donating, the committee encourages people to contact the Mt. Sterling Presbyterian Church at (618) 564-2616.
