Murphysboro residents celebrated Christmas as a community Thursday.

People enjoyed the annual holiday dinner at the Knights of Columbus building.

Families and friends ate all kinds of foods and desserts. Residents say they had a little bit of everything.

“I had some ham, some turkey, some sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and gravy,” resident, Robert Schuur said.

Children had the chance to sit and talk with Santa and many different prizes were also handed out.

This is the 21st year the Christmas dinner has been held and volunteer coordinator, Jennifer O'Donnell says volunteers make this event possible.

“Some of these people have put in ‘teens' of years volunteering,” O'Donnell said. “And that's what it takes.”

11-year-old volunteer, Rae Laughnan, says giving back to the community is what it's all about on Christmas.

“I advise any kid who doesn't have anything to do around this time or anybody who's sitting around at home, watching TV...if I were you, I'd think about maybe next year, doing something for the community,” Laughnan said. “It's better to give than to receive."

Laughnan says he's glad to experience helping others on Christmas day. “It's good for the community,” he said. “Sometimes they might be at a disadvantage. It's nice to help people out."

Residents say they couldn't be more thankful for the volunteers that put in the hard work and time.

"There's a lot of needy people out there that are probably in the same situation, you know? It's just too much for them to cook a big dinner,” Schuur said. “I have been coming here for several years and it's always great.”

More than 100 people showed up for the Christmas festivities and volunteer coordinators say they hope this event will continue for years to come.
