BENTON, MO (KFVS) - Scott County officials were surprised with an early Christmas gift this year.

Scott County Commissioner Dennis Ziegenhorn says court reporter Elaine Matthews found red tile under some carpet and it fits right in with the commission's project to replace ceramic floors in all of the offices.

However, because of the find, the offices behind the courtroom won't need to be renovated.

"As it turned out instead of having to lay the new ceramic that we're putting all over the courthouse we're just going to pull the carpet up and clean it and we're in business," Ziegenhorn says.

Ziegenhorn says it's a unique find.

"This is the old ceramic that's been here for 100 years," Ziegenhorn said.

"The courthouse has lasted through a lot of judges, a lot of commissioners, a lot of sheriff's, a lot of people but it's still standing," Ziegenhorn said.

Ziegenhorn says it will actually save the commission money on the renovations.

"This is a small amount of money but everything counts," Ziegenhorn said. "... You save your nickels and they'll end up being dimes and quarters."

He says the money will go back into the county's general revenue fund to be used in the future.

"There's always something. Just like in anybody's life. There's always something that comes up, some sewer stops up or some light bulb goes out or whatever."
