Holiday safety tips

(KFVS) -

The most wonderful time of the year can turn ugly fast if you don't follow safety tips to protect yourself, your home and your family.

Health safety

  • Wash your hands often with soap and hot water.
  • Cook food thoroughly and avoid cross contamination.
  • Try to throw in as many fruits and vegetables as possible for holiday dinners and avoid too many fatty, sugary, salty foods.
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say kids are at a high risk for injury during the holidays. Watch out for toys and foods that can be a choking hazard.
  • Simply relax. You will feel so much better and your stress levels will be lower if you can find time to take a few deep breaths and just remember to enjoy yourself and your family.
Personal safety
  • Keep valuables that are in your car out of sight.
  • Lock your car and make sure your alarm is activated.
  • In your home, don't leave wrapped gifts out in plain sight.
  • If you're headed out of town for the holidays, have someone watch your house and leave a TV and lights on a timer so your house looks occupied.
  • Be aware that this time of year criminals may come to your door posing as a package delivery person or someone collecting for charity. So be careful when opening your door to strangers.
Tree safety
  • If you have a live tree, remember to water it frequently. However, keep in mind that trees can only hold so much water after they've been cut.
  • Take the tree down when it becomes too dry to safely be in your home.
  • Keep the tree away from flames and heat. The heat can dry out the tree, making it a fire hazard, and obviously the flames are dangerous around the tree.
  • When using a live tree, limit the time you have it up in your home. Try putting it up later in the season and taking it down soon after Christmas.
  • Check the lights on your tree often to make sure the wires and bulbs are in proper working order.
