SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - Flu cases are up this year and now, there are concerns about the popular drug used to treat the virus.

The flu outbreak means some parts of the country are seeing a shortage of the treatment drug Tamiflu.

Although it will not cure the influenza, doctors prescribe Tamiflu to those infected to help kill off the virus quicker.

We are told some even recommend family members of patients diagnosed with the flu take the drug as a precautionary measure.

With thousands around the country already infected, Tamiflu's availability has been scarce.

Sikeston Medical Arts Pharmacy pharmacist Chase Deason says Tamiflu sales there are up from last year - but there is still plenty in stock.

"I don't know if we've had much of an outbreak of flu here, specifically, but certain parts of the country probably will get hit worse,” Deason said. “That's where you'll probably hear the stories of a shortage."

Heartland News contacted a number of pharmacies on Monday and all reported having Tamiflu in stock. Though, it still may be worth calling ahead before going to get your prescription filled.
