Man in custody after overnight shooting in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

A man faces charges after an overnight shooting in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Ashton Trotter, 20, was been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm.

According to Mt. Vernon Police, shortly after 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, the Mt. Vernon Police Department received a report that a male had had been shot and was being transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by private vehicle.

The report indicated the male had been shot while on a parking lot in the area of Salem Road and George Street.

Patrol officers talked to the victim.

They called in Mt. Vernon Police detectives and a Mt. Vernon Police Department Crime Scene Technician to assist with the investigation.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office secured the victim's vehicle for processing.

During the investigation detectives identified Ashton Trotter as the shooter.

Patrol officers and detectives responded to Trotter's home In the 800 block of Apricot.

Jefferson County States Attorney Doug Hoffman assisted detectives in applying for a search warrant, which was granted by a judge.

After getting the search warrant, officers entered the home, and Trotter surrendered to a Mt. Vernon Police K9 unit around 11 a.m. on Sunday.

There is no word on the condition of the victim.
