'Super Saturday' to yield record shoppers, travelers

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - More than 98 million travelers are expected to hit the roads this weekend breaking holiday travel records -- And this Saturday before Christmas is expected to yield record shoppers too.

According to AAA, those travelers are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend.

AAA says that could be because the national average for a gallon of unleaded gasoline has fallen to a four year low.

And the Saturday before Christmas or "Super Saturday," is expected to yield a record shoppers for the day as major retailers offer end of the year deals.

In Carbondale, Illinois at the University Mall, thousands of shoppers were taking part.

“Didn't have a place to park," Kevin Allen, a father from Ada, Illinois said. "That was the biggest thing here, we drove around probably 45 minutes just to find a parking spot.”

Some people were simply procrastinating their gift shopping.
“Me and my buddies are buying some females some gifts for Christmas," Devon Payne from Sessor, Illinois said.  "Waited to the last minute so we figured we come today. [Thought] maybe we'd beat the rush but it didn't look like we did.”

Some people have already made it to their holiday destination. Michelle Deserio from Iowa is visiting her family and was taking her grandchildren to see Santa.

“Oh it's packed out here. Everybody's getting in on the last minute deals and coming out to see Santa Clause," Deserio said.

Michael Miller, a father from Carterville, Ill. was doing some last minute shopping as well.

“A few last minute gifts... You can't wait till the last minute to get all the gifts for the wife," Miller said. "This was kind of the icing or the cherry on top."
