New vaccine recommendations for seniors

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Centers for Disease Control has released new recommendations for older adults when it comes to getting the vaccines commonly used to prevent pneumonia.

Adults older than 65 should get the PCV13 and PPSV23 vaccines.

Some adults may have already gotten the second vaccine based on previous recommendations.

Experts say there are other benefits as well.

"The most common thing that its known for is helping to prevent pneumonia," said Stephanie Rogers with Broadway Prescription Shop. "Obviously pneumonia is very dangerous in seniors, there's about 18,000 people a year that die from pneumonia. It can also help prevent meningitis and other lung diseases so extremely important especially for the aging population."

You should talk to your doctor to find out which vaccines are right for you.
