Carbondale leaders set to purchase Old Horizon Inn

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  Big changes could be coming to a giant eyesore in Carbondale, Illinois.

The Old Horizon Inn on East Main Street was recently bought by the city for less than $2,000.

Now, city leaders have to decide what to do with the space.

The building has sat empty for more than 10 years.

In that time, pieces of the building have fallen off, the pavement is worn out and it is becoming something of a blemish for folks who work and live nearby.

What once was a happening place to be is no more.

The Old Horizon Inn is now just a scary building that folks can't help but notice on their way into town.

“I think it is a great opportunity for Carbondale to renew this place and make it nice,” said Jeanie Ferh who lives nearby.

Carbondale City Manager Kevin Baity said he is working on finalizing the contract to purchase the site with the Jackson County Board.

From there, the city will either demolish the building and sell the property or sell it as is to a developer to take care of the work.

Baity said option two will save the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Nearby store owners say their eager to see something positive happen to space.

“This is a key location, we are right on the main drag coming into Carbondale and I think that any business that has a good plan will benefit from this location, it is an absolutely key location,” said Mike Ricci.

City Manager Kevin Baity said there are already a few interested buyers.

He hopes the city council will decide what to do next by the end of January.
