Union Co., KY coal miner dies in underground mining incident

UNION COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

A Union County, Kentucky miner died on Tuesday, Dec. 16 after he was hit by a ram car at an underground mine near Waverly.

The Kentucky Division of Mine Safety identified the miner as 34-year-old Eli Eldridge of Sturgis.

They say the incident happened at the Patriot Coal Company's Highland No. 9 mine around 11 a.m.

According to DMS, the mine has been closed while their officials investigate.

A ram car is a shuttle vehicle that carries coal from the continuous miner to the feeder on the belt line.

DMS said this is the second mine-related death in Kentucky in 2014.

A surface mine operator died on Oct. 8 at a mine in Bell County.
