SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A Scott County deputy was honored for what the governor calls "an extraordinary act of bravery and heroism."

Corporal Justin Wooten was awarded the Medal of Valor for pulling the train crew out of a burning engine during a train derailment in Rockview in 2013.

Cpl. Wooten said he'd do it again in a heartbeat. He said he's humbled to receive the medal and excited to make the trip.

He told Heartland News about that day almost two years ago and said the experience was one he will never forget.

"It was kind of surreal getting there seeing that the bridge had collapsed. It was a chaotic scene for sure. I could see the train on it's side and flames showing. At the time there was a lot of adrenalin and you don't think about the fear. We do it because that's our job, to help people," said Cpl. Wooten.

He said he has not met the two men who's lives he saved.

Seven people were injured in the massive train collision in Scott County that took down an overpass. Officials say that around 2:30 a.m. on May 25, 2013 there was a train crash near County Road 210 and Highway M in the Rockview community. The Highway M overpass collapsed on impact.

A Union Pacific train T-boned a BNSF Railway train that had just made it through the intersection.

The collision caused one of the trains to derail and hit a pillar under the overpass causing it to collapse. A dozen Union Pacific train cars derailed.

Deputy Wooten and nine other law enforcement officers were honored during a ceremony at the state capitol on Thursday.
