CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

A man is facing charges after jumping from an ambulance and hijacking a car in Carbondale Monday evening, according to the Carbondale Police Department.

Interim Police Chief Jeff Grubbs says around 6:20 p.m. 35-year-old Salim P. Baker was being taken to Choate Mental Health in Anna via Route 51.

Grubbs says Baker broke his restraints and jumped from the ambulance that was transporting him.

Baker tried to flag down passing cars for a ride.

Grubbs says Baker then hijacked a car just south of Pleasant Hill Road near South Illinois Avenue that had a female driver and her infant child.

Baker reportedly demanded that the driver take him to his home on the 400 block of East Chestnut Street. The driver complied, according to Grubbs, and in the 100 block of Jackson Street Baker got out of the vehicle and ran away on foot after the driver screamed for help.

Police were able to find Baker at his home. He was arrested and charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle and disorderly conduct.

Baker was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for further evaluation.

He is currently in custody, according to Grubbs.
